Francois Krige Rose 5lt
This is a robust, well-formed bush reaching approximately 1.5 m in height, producing long-stemmed flowers with large, globular buds. The blooms open slowly into beautifully quartered, double flowers that carry the romantic charm of old-fashioned roses.
The rich crimson-red colouring remains bright and stable, even in full sun, while the firm petals ensure excellent longevity both on the plant and in the vase.
Named in honour of Francois Krige (1913–1994), this rose pays tribute to the renowned South African artist, traveller, and reclusive figure of the art world. Krige received early recognition for his work, including a medal of honour for painting and graphic art from the South African Academy for Science and Arts in 1949. Despite this, he remained distant from the public art scene, quietly developing a body of work inspired by the landscapes, people, fauna, and flora of southern Africa.
Coming from a notable family—son of novelist Sannie, brother of poet Uys Krige, and son of rugby legend Japie Uys—Francois Krige chose a more solitary path, living and working in the Western Cape, away from the spotlight and his family’s prominence.
