Dahlias, known as “dahlia” in South Africa, are beloved flowering plants admired for their breathtaking and diverse blooms. They belong to the Asteraceae family, which includes familiar flowers like sunflowers, daisies, and asters. Dahlias are native to the mountainous regions of Mexico and Central America but have found a special place in South African gardens.

Flowers: Dahlias produce large, striking flowers in a wide range of colours, including shades of red, pink, purple, orange, yellow, and white. The flowers can have single, double, or semi-double blooms, and they come in various forms such as ball, cactus, pompon, waterlily, and decorative, among others. Some varieties even feature contrasting or variegated petals. The size of the flowers can range from small, about 5cm in diameter, to giant dinner-plate-sized blooms, which can reach up to 30cm or more.

Plant Size: Dahlia plants come in various heights, with some growing as short as 30-60cm and others reaching heights of 120-180cm or more, depending on the cultivar. The plants have sturdy, upright stems and a bushy growth habit.

Foliage: Dahlias have dark green, toothed or lobed leaves that provide an attractive backdrop to the vibrant flowers. The foliage is typically dense and can create a lush appearance in the garden.

Growth Cycle: Dahlias are perennial plants, but in many regions of South Africa, they are treated as tender perennials or annuals due to their sensitivity to frost. In colder areas, tubers (underground storage structures) are often dug up and stored indoors during winter to protect them from freezing. In spring, the tubers are planted again to grow new plants.

Sun and Soil Requirements: Dahlias thrive in full sun, although they can tolerate partial shade. They prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral (around 6.0-7.5) for optimal growth.

Care and Maintenance: Dahlias require regular watering to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mulching can help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Supporting the plants with stakes or cages can prevent them from falling over, especially taller varieties. Removing faded or damaged foliage and deadheading spent flowers can promote continuous blooming and improve the plant’s appearance. In regions with frost, digging up and storing tubers in a cool, dry place is necessary for winter survival.

Propagation: Dahlias can be propagated through division or by taking stem cuttings. Dividing tubers in spring or fall is a common method, where each division should have a bud or “eye” for new growth. Stem cuttings can be taken from actively growing shoots and rooted in a suitable medium.

Dahlias, or “dahlias,” are widely cherished in South African gardens and are a popular choice for adding vibrant colours and striking beauty to landscapes. With proper care and selection of suitable cultivars, they can provide a magnificent and long-lasting display of flowers in your garden.
