Hoya Australis 14cm Pot

Hoya australis, commonly known as the Wax Plant or Common Waxflower, is a popular species of the Hoya genus. It is native to Australia and is cherished for its waxy, succulent-like leaves and beautiful clusters of fragrant flowers.

Appearance: Hoya australis is a trailing or climbing plant that features thick, leathery leaves. The leaves are typically oval-shaped and have a glossy, waxy texture, which gives the plant its common name. The colour of the leaves can vary from dark green to lighter shades.

Flowers: Hoya australis produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers. The flowers are usually creamy-white or pale pink, with a sweet, honey-like fragrance. The blossoms are highly attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Lighting Requirements: Hoya australis prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some morning or evening sun, but intense, direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves. Place the plant near a window with filtered light or provide artificial light if necessary.

Temperature and Humidity: This plant thrives in average room temperatures between 15-24°C. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but should be protected from cold drafts. Hoya australis appreciates moderate to high humidity levels, so misting the leaves or placing it on a tray of water and pebbles can be beneficial.

Watering: Allow the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil to dry out before watering the Hoya australis. It prefers a well-draining soil mix, so ensure that the pot has proper drainage. Overwatering should be avoided, as it can lead to root rot. During the winter months, reduce watering frequency.

Soil and Fertiliser: Use a well-draining soil mix specifically formulated for succulents or cacti. Adding perlite or orchid bark can improve drainage. Fertilise the plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength.

Pruning and Maintenance: Prune Hoya australis to control its size and shape. It responds well to pruning and can be trained to climb a trellis or allowed to trail down from a hanging basket. Regularly remove any dead or yellowing leaves to maintain its appearance.
