Bearded Iris Various 15cm Pot
Iris germanica, commonly known as Bearded Iris, is a spectacular flowering perennial valued for its large, elegant blooms and attractive sword-shaped foliage. Available in a beautiful variety of colours, including purple, blue, white, yellow, pink, peach, burgundy and stunning bi-colour combinations, Bearded Irises bring vibrant seasonal colour and architectural interest to the garden. Their distinctive ruffled petals and colourful, beard-like markings make them particularly attractive for feature planting, mixed perennial borders, mass planting and cottage gardens.
Indigenous: No – garden Bearded Irises are derived primarily from European and Mediterranean species and cultivated hybrids
Growth Habit: Clump-forming, rhizomatous perennial, generally reaching 40–100 cm in height when flowering, depending on the variety, with a spread of approximately 30–60 cm
Foliage: Long, upright, sword-shaped, grey-green to blue-green leaves arranged in attractive fan-shaped clumps
Flowers: Large, showy, often fragrant flowers featuring three upright petals (standards) and three downward-curving petals (falls), with distinctive fuzzy beards; available in a wide variety of colours and bi-colour combinations
Position: Full sun; best flowering occurs with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily
Watering: Low to moderate; water regularly while establishing and reduce watering once established, particularly during dormant periods
Soil: Fertile, well-drained sandy or loamy soil; prefers neutral to slightly alkaline conditions and dislikes waterlogged soil
Wildlife: Flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinating insects
Uses: Mixed perennial borders, feature planting, mass planting, cottage gardens, garden edging, containers, Mediterranean gardens and ornamental landscaping

✔ Low Maintenance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good – hardy and relatively easy to maintain with occasional division and removal of spent flowers
✔ Waterwise / Drought Tolerance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent – established plants are highly drought tolerant when grown in suitable soil
✔ Coastal Tolerance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good – suitable for sunny, well-drained coastal gardens, preferably sheltered from severe salt spray
✔ Garden Style Fit: Cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens, traditional gardens, contemporary landscapes, mixed perennial borders, gravel gardens and waterwise gardens
💡 Planting Tip: Plant Bearded Iris rhizomes in full sun with excellent drainage, leaving the upper surface of the rhizome exposed or only lightly covered with soil. Avoid planting too deeply, as this can prevent flowering and encourage rhizome rot. Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart and divide overcrowded clumps every 3–4 years to maintain healthy growth and abundant flowering. In Cape Town, raised beds or well-drained garden positions are particularly beneficial during the wet winter months.
