Hemerocallis 15cm Pot
Common Name: Daylily

Hemerocallis, commonly known as Daylily, is a beautiful, hardy flowering perennial valued for its spectacular trumpet-shaped flowers and attractive, arching, grass-like foliage. Available in a wide variety of colours, including yellow, orange, red, pink, peach, purple and cream, Daylilies bring vibrant seasonal colour to garden beds and borders. Their reliable growth, adaptability and relatively low-maintenance requirements make them excellent choices for mass planting, mixed perennial borders, containers and ornamental landscaping.

Indigenous: No – the genus originates from Asia, with many cultivated garden hybrids
Growth Habit: Clump-forming, herbaceous perennial, generally reaching 30–90 cm in height, depending on the variety, with a spread of approximately 40–80 cm
Foliage: Long, narrow, arching, strap-like green leaves forming dense, attractive clumps; varieties may be deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen
Flowers: Large, showy, trumpet-shaped to star-shaped flowers in numerous colours and patterns, generally flowering from late spring through summer; individual blooms typically last one day, but multiple buds provide an extended display
Position: Full sun to light semi-shade; best flowering usually occurs with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily
Watering: Moderate; water regularly while establishing and during hot, dry periods, particularly while flowering
Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost; adaptable to a range of soil types
Wildlife: Flowers attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects
Uses: Mixed perennial borders, mass planting, garden edging, feature planting, containers, cottage gardens, landscaping and flowering garden beds

🌿 Garden Design & Use Guide

✔ Hedging: ⭐⭐⭐ Good – suitable for creating low, informal flowering borders rather than traditional woody hedges
✔ Screening / Privacy: ⭐⭐ Limited – dense foliage provides some low-level seasonal screening but is unsuitable for tall privacy hedges
✔ Shade Creation: ⭐ Not Suitable – does not provide meaningful shade
✔ Feature Plant: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent – large, colourful flowers create an outstanding seasonal garden display
✔ Mass Planting: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent – particularly impressive when planted in groups or repeated along garden beds
✔ Border / Edging: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent – arching foliage and colourful blooms make Daylilies ideal for pathways and garden borders
✔ Groundcover: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good – established clumps provide attractive foliage coverage and help fill garden beds
✔ Container Use: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good – suitable for large pots and patio planters with adequate watering and drainage
✔ Low Maintenance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent – hardy, adaptable and generally easy to maintain once established
✔ Waterwise / Drought Tolerance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good – established plants tolerate periods of drought, although regular watering improves flowering
✔ Coastal Tolerance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good – suitable for many coastal gardens, particularly where protected from severe salt-laden winds
✔ Garden Style Fit: Cottage gardens, contemporary landscapes, traditional gardens, mixed perennial borders, courtyard gardens and colourful ornamental landscapes

💡 Planting Tip: Plant Hemerocallis in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil and space plants approximately 40–60 cm apart, depending on the variety. Keep the crown close to soil level and avoid planting too deeply. Remove spent flower stems to maintain a tidy appearance, and divide overcrowded clumps every few years to encourage healthy growth and flowering. In Cape Town, apply mulch and water deeply during hot, dry summer periods to support strong flowering.
