Achillea Millefolium 15cm Pot
Common Name: Yarrow, Common Yarrow, Milfoil
Achillea millefolium, commonly known as Yarrow, is a hardy, attractive flowering perennial valued for its delicate, fern-like foliage and beautiful flat-topped clusters of small flowers. Available in a range of colours, including white, pink, red, yellow and peach through its many cultivated varieties, Yarrow provides long-lasting seasonal colour and texture. Its excellent drought tolerance, ability to attract pollinators and relatively low-maintenance growth make it particularly suitable for mixed perennial borders, cottage gardens, mass planting and waterwise landscaping.
Indigenous: No – not indigenous to South Africa; widely distributed throughout temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere
Growth Habit: Fast-growing, clump-forming to spreading herbaceous perennial, generally reaching 30–90 cm in height when flowering, with a spread of approximately 30–60 cm or more
Foliage: Soft, finely divided, fern-like, aromatic green to grey-green leaves forming attractive, feathery foliage
Flowers: Dense, flat-topped clusters of numerous tiny flowers, typically white to pale pink in the wild species, with cultivated varieties available in pink, red, yellow, peach and other shades; flowering mainly from late spring through summer and into autumn in favourable conditions
Position: Full sun; tolerates light semi-shade but flowers best in a sunny position
Watering: Low to moderate while establishing; drought tolerant once established
Soil: Well-drained sandy, loamy or gravelly soil; tolerates relatively poor soils and dislikes prolonged waterlogging
Wildlife: Flowers attract bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other beneficial pollinating insects
Uses: Mixed perennial borders, cottage gardens, mass planting, cut flowers, dried flower arrangements, wildlife gardens, meadow-style planting, rockeries and waterwise landscaping

✔ Container Use: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good – suitable for medium to large containers with good drainage
✔ Low Maintenance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent – hardy, adaptable and requires relatively little attention once established
✔ Waterwise / Drought Tolerance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent – highly drought tolerant once established
✔ Coastal Tolerance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good – suitable for sunny, well-drained coastal gardens, particularly in sheltered positions
✔ Garden Style Fit: Cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens, prairie gardens, wildlife gardens, naturalistic landscapes, gravel gardens and waterwise gardens
💡 Planting Tip: Plant Achillea millefolium in full sun with well-drained soil, spacing plants approximately 30–45 cm apart for mass planting. Remove spent flower heads to encourage further flowering and trim back tired growth to promote fresh foliage. Avoid excessive fertilising, as overly rich soil can produce weak, floppy stems. In Cape Town, Yarrow performs well in sunny, waterwise gardens but benefits from good drainage during the wet winter months.
